VOLVO RE-ENGINES
Article Added: 28 July 2010
Volvo SA has upgraded its 2011 model line-up from July with two new five-cylinder two-litre turbo-diesel engines and upgraded six-cylinder petrol engines, now offering an even wider choice than ever before. "The new engines offer greater driving pleasure across the range. What is more, our strong drive to reduce carbon dioxide emissions means that fuel consumption has been cut as well," said Magnus Jonsson, Senior Vice President Product Development at Volvo Cars. The new five-cylinder D3, which will be introduced locally in the XC60 toward the end of the year, is in principle the same engine as the well-established 2.4-litre diesel, but its displacement has been reduced with a shorter stroke to optimise fuel consumption. The engine has been optimised for low fuel consumption and the injection system has a different type of piezoelectric fuel injector compared with the D5 engine. These injectors minimise consumption with exceptionally rapid and precise injection pulses under high pressure.

This promotes extremely efficient combustion. In order to give the car better driving properties, the turbocharger has been fine-tuned to provide high torque from low revs. In the Volvo XC60 the newly developed 2-litre D3 diesel engine produces 120kW and 400 Nm of torque. Fuel consumption on the Volvo XC60 D3 manual is 5.9 litres/100km and CO2 emissions are 154g/km. The Volvo S80, XC70 and XC60 can also be specified with the high-performance D5 engine that produces 151kW and 420Nm of torque. Both variants of the new two-litre turbo-diesel can be mated to a six-speed automatic transmission or six-speed manual gearbox. In the D5, the automatic transmission now also features a Sport setting for more agile gear changes. In the Volvo C30, S40 and V50 the new D4 2-litre turbo-diesel will be introduced next year. The new D4 turbo-diesel produces 130kW and 400Nm of torque. The D4 engine meets the Euro 5 emission standards, with a fuel consumption figure of just 5.1 litres/100 km and CO2 emissions of 134 g/km in manual guise.

Volvo claims the C40 D4 manual consumes an average of 5.1 litres/100km while the S40 nD4 auto 5.6 and the V50 D4 auto 5.8. Volvo's S80, XC70 and XC60 will also get upgraded petrol engines: The six-cylinder, turbocharged T6 has a displacement of 3.0 litres and it now offers even sharper performance, thanks mainly to a reduction in internal friction. As in the all-new S60, it now offers 224kW and no less than 440 Nm of torque. Maximum torque is achieved between 2100 and 4200 revs. This results in rapid acceleration and smooth driving properties. All-Wheel Drive is fitted as standard on the T6. The six-cylinder 3.2-litre naturally aspirated engine has also been upgraded and features an improved crankshaft and less internal friction. It now offers 179kW and maximum torque is 320 Nm. Claimed automatic average consumption is 9.9 for the S80 T6, 10.1 for the XC70 3.2 and 10.7 for the XC60 T6. Among the other new features in the 2011 Volvo S80, XC70 and XC60 line-up are: New exterior colour, Flamenco Red, for all four models.

The Volvo XC60 is also available in a new colour, Seashell, and the range of wheel rims has been extended with a new 18-inch wheel with six double spokes. Electrically folding rear seat headrests in the XC70. Among the other new features in the 2011 Volvo C30, S40, V50 and C70 line-up are: The Volvo S40 and V50 now get the same larger iron mark as the Volvo C30 and C70. The grille's design is otherwise unchanged. New paint option for the Volvo C30, S40 and V50 - Flamenco Red. The Volvo S40 and V50 are now also available in Cosmic White and Orange Flame. C70 buyers can now specify optional parking sensors front and rear. All the new features in the Volvo 2011 model year range are available from July 2010.
